New liver cancer therapy tried in Valley

At 30, Peoria resident Brian Anderson is unusually young to be battling colon cancer.

On Wednesday, he became unusual for another reason: Doctors injected radioactive beads into his body to battle the disease, which has spread to his liver.

It was the first such procedure in the country using radioactive beads, SIR-Spheres, since the FDA approved the product in March. The beads have been used to treat hundreds of liver cancer patients in Australia, New Zealand and Asia.
